The Sugar Bowl
The Sugar Bowl
This piece was inspired by a simple silver plated sugar bowl Rosanne brought with her from Mississippi when she moved to Honduras almost 19 years ago. She, and her husband Jeff Mckenney and their young family moved to start and work in a mission Hospital on the North Coast of Honduras.
The bowl wasn’t particularly special to her but her friend, an interior decorator and fine artist, suggested she bring some personal and pretty things that would make her new jungle residence feel like home .
This friend had survived dramatic moves and upheaval in her life, starting with leaving a dungeon hideaway in a castle where she along with her family and 25 others were hidden during Nazi occupation of Demark. She was only 3 when she saw sunlight for the first time again after almost 2 years. Her wisdom was born from hardship and a deep appreciation for beauty. “so I brought this humble worn silver plated sugar bowl as a reminder of the beautiful Antebellum South, I was leaving. Funny how things turned out though”
Rosanne brought a few sentimental pretty things, and left more important mementos and pictures in the safety of her climate controlled home in MS only to have these things, including their home, utterly destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, 5 years after moving to Honduras
“The lesson I come away with is: appreciate the beautiful things in this world, in the moment, but hold on to them lightly, so it doesn’t hurt so much when they are inevitably pried from our fingers.
This outlook has helped me purchase art I love when I see it. I have never regreted a piece I have bought, only those I didn't.
